Tesla shows off a solar-powered 'trailer'
Photos on Twitter showed a Tesla-branded trailer with a set of solar panels on top
Images of a seemingly solar-powered, battery-boosting trailer for Tesla electric vehicles (EVs) have surfaced with news that Elon Musk has lost its top sales position to a competitor.
The photos, which were posted on Twitter, showed a trailer with the Tesla logo on top of a set of solar panels . One of the panels was above the trailer, and two more panels scattered over a set of wheels, complete with two red lights.
The photos were taken at a tech fair in Germany, according to reports, and led to speculation that the trailer could be used to expand the range of electric vehicles.
Electrek , a transportation blog, suggested that the product was simply built for the fair, not necessarily a product that will be launched in the consumer market.

The Independent has reached out to Tesla for comment.According to the Twitter user who posted the photos, the trailer is connected to Starlink. The internet is powered by satellite and is powered by SpaceX, which was also founded by Mr. Musk.
Solar panels could theoretically power an EV while it's driving, extending the miles a driver gets on a single battery charge. However, it is unclear how much power this type of trailer can generate.
In calculating the back of the envelope, Electrek figured that based on the estimated size of the photovoltaic panels in the image, less than 50 miles (80 km) of range would be added per day.
Tesla's website states that the current four car models have between 272 and 405 miles (438-652 km) of range. The company also sells solar energy equipment such as panels for homes.
Despite recent advances in battery technology and charging infrastructure, the range of electric vehicles remains a concern for some potential customers.
However, the electric vehicle market is growing rapidly. In 2021, there were more than 4.6 million battery electric vehicle sales worldwide — more than double the sales of 2020, according to data from the International Energy Agency (IEA).
Nearly three million cars were sold in China, up from less than a million in 2020.
On Tuesday, news broke that Tesla had lost its ranking as the world's largest seller of electric vehicles to BYD, the Chinese manufacturer backed by Berkshire Hathaway Group, run by US billionaire Warren Buffet.
In the first half of 2022, BYD sold 641,000 electric and plug-in hybrid cars, compared to 564 thousand Tesla cars.
The International Energy Agency expects nearly 22 million sales of battery electric vehicles in 2030, more than 10 million of them in China.
